Turn your ideas into opportunities in one of New Mexico’s fastest-growing regions. Sandoval County offers entrepreneurs access to business resources, workforce support, strategic locations, and a growing community where companies can launch, expand, and succeed.

Step 1: Register Your Business Entity & Tax ID

Before applying for local permits, you must legally establish your business and get your tax requirements sorted

  • Business Structure: Register your business entity (e.g., LLC, Corporation) through the New Mexico Secretary of State Business Services Portal. Fees typically range from \(\$50\) to \(\$135\) depending on the entity.
  • State Tax ID: Register with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department to obtain your Combined Reporting System (CRS) number/Business Tax Identification Number

Step 2: Obtain Local Rio Rancho Business Registration

Any business operating within city limits must register with the City of Rio Rancho.

  • Commercial or Home-Based: Choose the application that fits your operation.
  • How to Apply: Submit your Application for Business Registration to the City Clerk's Office (3200 Civic Center Circle NE). The application process generally requires reviews by Development Services (zoning) and the Fire Marshall.

Step 3: Secure Specialized Permits & Licenses

Depending on your industry, additional paperwork is mandatory:

  • Industry-Specific Licenses: Restaurants, commercial care facilities, and professional trades will require separate state, county, or federal licenses before the city will issue a business license.
  • Sandoval County: If your commercial business operates in the unincorporated areas of Sandoval County, you will also need to register with the Sandoval County Clerk's Office and pay an annual \(\$35\) fee.

Step 4: Leverage Local Business Resources

Free assistance, training, and one-on-one advising are available to help you draft your business plan and navigate financing options:
